Tata Steel UK and JCB signed green steel agreement

Tata Steel UK and JCB signed a Memorandum of Understanding for the supply of low-emission steel.

Tata Steel UK and JCB signed green steel agreement

Tata Steel announced that once its transformation plans are complete, it is to supply green steel to British construction equipment manufacturer JCB from Tata Steel's facilities in Port Talbot. JCB, which focuses on reducing carbon emissions in its manufacturing processes and machine designs, plans to use this environmentally friendly steel.

The project includes the construction of a new state-of-the-art electric arc furnace (EAF), one of the largest in the world, with a capacity of 3 million tons per year, offering a lower carbon alternative to the traditional blast furnace method. The EAF plans to convert UK-sourced scrap into new high-quality steel, eliminating the need to ship millions of tons of iron ore and coal worldwide. Tata Steel announced that the plant is expected to reduce CO emissions by up to 90% and the UK's overall carbon emissions by around 1.5%.

Anil Jhanji, Chief Commercial Officer of Tata Steel UK stated, “One of the key drivers in our transition plans is that our long-standing and loyal customers such as JCB need green steel to meet their own decarbonization ambitions. They want to be supplied by a trusted partner making quality steel within the UK.”

Wayne Asprey, Group Purchasing Director of JCB also emphasized, “Tata Steel is a long-term supply partner for JCB and this agreement marks an essential next step in our journey towards supply chain decarbonization. We are fully supportive of Tata Steel UK’s investment proposals and are pleased to be one of the first customers to endorse those plans by making this agreement to secure British-made green steel as soon as it is available.”
