U.S. crude steel production increased by 8.2% in the week ending April 4

U.S. crude steel production recorded an 8.2% year-on-year increase in the week ending April 4, 2026.

According to data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), U.S. crude steel production totaled 1,831,000 net tons in the week in question. This represents an 8.2% increase compared to 1,692,000 net tons recorded in the same week last year. The capacity utilization rate reached 79.1% this year, up from 75.6% in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Production also increased compared to the previous week ending March 28, 2026. Output rose by 1.6%, from 1,803,000 net tons to 1,831,000 net tons in the week ending April 4. During the same period, the capacity utilization rate increased from 77.9% to 79.1%.

As of April 4, 2026, adjusted year-to-date crude steel production totaled 24,028,000 net tons. This marks a 5.2% increase compared to 22,835,000 net tons recorded in the same period last year. The year-to-date capacity utilization rate stood at 77.4%, compared to 76.1% last year.

According to AISI data, regional crude steel production in the week ending April 4, 2026 was recorded as 133,000 net tons in the Northeast, 517,000 net tons in the Great Lakes region, 286,000 net tons in the Midwest, 826,000 net tons in the South, and 69,000 net tons in the West, bringing total production to 1,831,000 net tons.
