The company supported the circular economy by converting the steelmaking by product, known as Linz Donawitz (LD) slag, into a valuable construction material. Tata Steel's Industrial By Products Management Division (IBMD) developed LD slag based artificial sand to address the long standing challenge of utilizing steelmaking slag.
A cross functional team from Tata Steel and Tata Steel UISL evaluated the suitability of the artificial sand for concrete production. As a result, concrete mixes for M15, M20 and M25 grades were successfully designed in accordance with Indian Standards IS 10262 and IS 456.
Each cubic meter of the newly developed concrete contains approximately one ton of LD slag based artificial sand. This significantly reduces dependence on natural sand while also helping lower the carbon footprint of conventional concrete.
The company's green concrete demonstrated strong cohesion, good pumpability and maintained its workability for up to two hours. Laboratory tests and field validations also delivered satisfactory results, confirming the material's suitability for practical construction applications.
