Tata Steel signs low carbon zinc agreement with Boliden

Dutch Tata Steel announced that it has signed an agreement with Swedish metals supplier Boliden to supply speciality grade zinc with one of the lowest CO2 footprints of any refined zinc in the world.

Tata Steel signs low carbon zinc agreement with Boliden

Boliden's low-carbon zinc is mined at the company's mine without the use of fossil energy. Tata Steel says, "According to Boliden, the zinc supplied causes less than 1 tonne of CO2 emissions per tonne of zinc, compared to the industry average of 3.6 tonnes. This gives it one of the lowest CO2 footprints among refined zincs in the world."

The deal fulfils a significant portion of Tata Steel Netherland's zinc requirements. "Our agreement with Boliden reduces our indirect CO2 emissions and marks a new step in our sustainability journey," says Willem Vermeulen, purchasing manager at Tata Steel Netherland.

Tata Steel Netherland uses recycled zinc as well as virgin zinc in its production, thus increasing the environmental benefits in addition to the low CO2 emission zinc utilisation provided by Boliden.
