According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, a Washington DC-based trade association, US steelmakers shipped 8.03 million tons of steel in June, the most recent month for which data is available.
This is a 33.3% increase compared to 6.02 million tons shipped in May and a 0.6% increase over 7.98 million tons shipped in June 2020.
Steel shipments are an important measure of the financial health of the steel industry, as it reflects the amount of steel actually sold to customers such as automakers, appliance manufacturers, and service centers that process steel for a wide variety of end uses.
In June, hot-dip galvanized sheet shipments increased by 19%, cold rolled sheet shipments increased by 14% and hot rolled sheet shipments increased by 6%.
So far this year, steelmakers in the United States have shipped 45.96 million tons of steel, an increase of 11.5% compared to 41.21 million tons shipped in the first six months of 2020. Automotive plants, one of its biggest steel customers, are suffering from intermittent shutdowns due to a global semiconductor shortage and could produce several million fewer vehicles this year, according to industry analysts.
