Steel sales in Germany rose 3.53 percent month on month to 867,869 metric tons in May, also higher than 862,807 metric tons sold in May 2021, German steel shareholders' association BDS reported.
May 2022 sales still fell short of the 934,772 mt monthly average sales recorded in the first quarter.
The association said that 282,651 mt of May sales were long products and 514,044 mt of flat products.
Stocks of steel products held by German distributors also rose in May, BDS reported.
According to BDS data, May inventories of 2.24 million mt were 1.05% monthly and 12.05% higher than the 1.97 million mt held in May 2021.
“We had particularly low stocks in early 2021. Stocks are now higher than last year, but still lower compared to other years like 2018 or 2019,” he said.
May 2022 stocks also increased compared to monthly inventories, which averaged 2.23 million mt in the first quarter of this year.
BDS said that 799,871 metric tons of May stocks consisted of long products and 1.39 million metric tons of flat products.
