SSAB is leading fossil-free production in Italy!

SSAB is aiming to be a pioneer by introducing zero carbon emission steel to the market in 2026 and to significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its own operations by around 2030.

SSAB is leading fossil-free production in Italy!

SSAB Swedish Steel S.p.A. has integrated solar panels on the roof of its production facility at the end of 2023, and as a result of this operation, the SSAB Ghedi Steel Service Center is now completely fossil fuel-free, which supports SSAB's strategy to achieve a more sustainable world.

The renovated steel roof reportedly uses trapezoidal profiles and sustainable GreenCoat® color-coated steel supplied by Ruukki Construction, part of the SSAB Group. The GreenCoat® color-coated steel uses Swedish rapeseed oil in the coating, reducing the carbon footprint and demonstrating a green option for roofs, claddings and rainwater systems.

SSAB Zero™, another commercially available steel product, is made from recycled steel produced with fossil fuel-free electricity and biogas. SSAB Ghedi Steel Service Center's transition to fossil fuel-free energy helps to strengthen the company's overall sustainable strategy. The project was implemented with modern smart solar solutions from Solnet Group, and the panels are expected to generate approximately 830 MWh of energy per year.

Julia Seeber, Managing Director of SSAB Swedish Steel S.p.A., commented: "We are pleased to achieve our sustainability goals thanks to solar energy. We will use about half of the energy provided by the solar system for our Ghedi steel service center production, our office building and for charging our electric vehicles. The rest will be sold back to the grid."
