SSAB expands steel powder production capacity in Oxelösund

Swedish steelmaker SSAB has decided to expand its steel powder production facility in Oxelösund dedicated to additive manufacturing (3D printing) applications.

SSAB expands steel powder production capacity in Oxelösund

The investment is aimed at enabling commercial-scale production while strengthening the company’s position in advanced materials.

Under the expansion project, production is scheduled to be gradually increased from the first quarter of 2028, reaching an annual capacity of approximately 350 tonnes. The additional capacity is intended to meet growing demand for high-performance metal powders used in 3D printing applications.

Additive manufacturing technology enables the production of stronger, lighter, and more advanced components while reducing material waste and shortening lead times. Previously used mainly for prototyping and spare parts production, the technology has increasingly become an important complement to industrial manufacturing, driven by rising demand from sectors such as defense, automotive, and engineering. It also supports more flexible and localized production, helping to reduce vulnerabilities in global supply chains.

Commenting on the project, SSAB Powder Technology President Jesper Vang stated that the company is expanding its production capacity and broadening its portfolio of steel powders for additive manufacturing. He noted that demand continues to grow for products that combine high performance with a low climate footprint.

Building on more than 50 years of experience in high-performance steel products, SSAB has developed its own range of high-strength steel powders optimized for additive manufacturing. These powders enable advanced designs that require low weight and high strength and can, in certain applications, serve as an alternative to aluminum. In addition, the materials can be used without post-production heat treatment, helping to reduce risk, lead times, and costs.

The expansion project is being carried out in cooperation with SMS group, whose technology meets SSAB’s demanding production requirements. Construction is expected to begin in 2026, and the facility is anticipated to employ around 20 people once it reaches full production capacity.
