SSAB has announced a USD 74 million investment to increase heat treatment capacity at its Axis facility in Alabama, USA. The investment will include the construction of a new building with a new tempering furnace and the upgrading of plant infrastructure.
Andy Bramstedt, General Manager of SSAB Alabama, stated that this investment will increase production capacity for the high-strength Hardox and Strenx steel brands, as well as improve trucking capabilities. The project will also create 12 new employment opportunities that will contribute to the regional economy.
Kjell Baeckman, Head of Specialty Steel Sales at SSAB, emphasized that the investment will enable a wider range of products to be offered from the Alabama plant, providing more comprehensive solutions to customers, especially in North and South America.
The investment is scheduled to start in 2025 and is expected to be completed in 2027. Bradley Byrne, CEO and President of The Mobile Chamber, stated that this step is a strategic contribution to the region's industrial capacity and expressed their satisfaction that SSAB continues to grow in the Mobile region.
