SSAB and Kirchhoff join forces in fossil-free steel production

Swedish SSAB and German automotive supplier Kirchhoff Automotive have announced that they will co-operate on fossil-free steel.

SSAB and Kirchhoff join forces in fossil-free steel production

Through this co-operation, Kirchhoff's safety-related structural components will be manufactured with SSAB's proprietary SSAB Fossil Free Steel. Earlier this year, the automotive supplier announced a similar co-operation with ArcelorMittal.

Kirchhoff's interlocking frames, bottom beams and tie plates are manufactured using a cold forming process, with each part weighing between 300 g and 1.3 kg. By using SSAB Fossil Free Steel, Kirchhoff hopes to reduce emissions in the production of a front bumper by almost 40 per cent.

SSAB Fossil Free Steel uses directly reduced iron and is produced without the use of fossil energy. Instead, biogas and fossil-free electricity are used. The steelmaker says that the quality and properties of this material are as good as the steel conventionally produced by SSAB.
