Spanishsteel producer Megasa resumed operations at its electric arc furnace-based plant in Narón, in the Galicia region, on Friday, after a forced stoppage of production due to high energy costs. The company also resumed its activities in Portugal last week.
The steelmaker will only produce at night, on weekends and holidays when electricity prices are lower.
Megasa stopped production on site on 1 March after it became economically unavailable. The plant is one of the largest electricity and gas consumers in northwest Spain.
The one-month shutdown only covered the foundry division and affected around 50 workers from March 14 to 31. It appears that the production stoppage does not affect the rolling lines, which continue to operate normally using billets from stock.
According to a media report, the steelmaker continues to supply scrap from Ferrol Port. Raw material imports were not affected during the domestic road transport strike that lasted for 16 days in the country.
Other steel companies in Spain such as ArcelorMittal and Celsa Atlantic are also gradually continuing production.
