According to a statement by the Korea Trade Commission, the investigation was officially launched on Monday under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The review will assess whether Chinese-origin products are being sold at dumped prices and whether they are causing injury to domestic producers.
The products subject to the investigation are defined as alloy special steel bars excluding iron, carbon steel, and stainless steel. Widely used in high value-added sectors such as automotive, aerospace, nuclear energy, and defense, these products are considered strategically important for industry.
The investigation was initiated following an anti-dumping petition filed in February by South Korean producers SeAH Besteel and SeAH Changwon Special Steel. The companies argued that low-priced imports from China pose a serious threat to domestic production.
According to the Korea International Trade Association, imports of “stainless and alloy steel bars,” including special steel bars, reached $648 million last year. Chinese products accounted for 60.9% of this amount, equivalent to $395 million. During the same period, the value of imports from China declined by 1.9%, while import volumes increased by 5.1% to exceed 556,000 tons.
