Official data released by the Egyptian Ministry of Supply and Internal Trade has highlighted a slowdown in the country's construction sector. According to official statistics, Egypt's registered rebar consumption showed a volatile trend during the first five months of 2026, totaling 2,805,330 tonnes.
The demand, which remained strong in the first quarter of the year, entered a sharp downward trend in April and May, dropping to levels that have raised concerns among producers.
Official consumption began the year at 613,430 tonnes in January and, following a brief decline to 482,900 tonnes in February, peaked at its highest level of the year in March at 771,800 tonnes. However, this momentum was short-lived. With the onset of spring, domestic demand eroded rapidly; consumption fell to 560,600 tonnes in April and plummeted to as low as 386,530 tonnes in May.
The volume recorded in May points to an approximate 50% drop in rebar demand within the Egyptian domestic market compared to the peak period in March.
Although the data indicates that total consumption for the first five months surpassed the 2.8 million-tonne threshold, the sharp contraction in May has sounded alarm bells across the construction and steel industries. Analysts emphasize that for demand to revive and the market to stabilize, local construction projects must gain momentum and financing channels need to ease in the coming months.
