Recent US sanctions against Iran have hit Singapore-based SeaLead, one of the rising players in container shipping, hard. The company was forced to cancel the charter contracts of 16 of the 22 container ships that the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned for Iranian connections. The move directly affected approximately 30% of SeaLead's fleet and 36% of its transportation capacity.
While OFAC imposed sanctions on 22 vessels, 16 vessels chartered by SeaLead
The vessels on Ofac's sanction list and Alphaliner's SeaLead fleet list serving Asia-Europe are: Timon, Simba Hakuna Matata, Bigli, Yogi, Rantanplan, Pumba, Moana, Pinocchio and Ace.
Lidia, Ale, Zagor and Bertie in the Asia-Red Sea trade. Also sanctioned are Star in the Asia-North America trade and Star in the Middle East-India trade.
In a statement to Lloyd's List on Friday, SeaLead confirmed that charter contracts for all sanctioned vessels have been terminated and cargo loading on the vessels has ceased. The company also stated that they are “in full compliance with applicable sanctions laws”.
