Jindal Steel uses syngas in its furnaces to counter natural gas shortage

India-based Jindal Steel has started using syngas (synthesis gas) in the furnaces of its galvanizing and color-coating lines to sustain operations amid shortages of natural gas, LPG, and propane. In a statement released on Monday, the company noted that syngas is a clean and circular fuel obtained by converting waste and biomass into energy.

Syngas, produced through coal gasification, is helping alleviate fuel constraints in the high-temperature furnaces where Jindal Steel applies zinc and color coatings to steel strips used in the construction, home appliances, and automotive sectors. Thanks to this innovative step, the company is able to maintain its production processes without disruption during supply interruptions.

The use of syngas both improves energy efficiency and contributes to circular economy goals.
