SAIL to start using biochar in steelmaking process

India's state-owned company Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has taken a significant step toward reducing carbon emissions by introducing biochar into its steelmaking process at the Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha. On August 24, SAIL conducted a successful trial of biochar in the No. 1 Blast Furnace, which could partially replace pulverized coal injection. Biochar, produced from the pyrolysis of plant and animal biomass, offers a sustainable alternative to traditional fossil fuels in steel production.

India's steel industry predominantly relies on coal-based blast furnace technology, responsible for 73% of the country's ironmaking capacity. SAIL's initiative aligns with a global trend toward greener steel production as nations aim for net-zero emissions. While SAIL has not yet set specific timelines for full implementation, the trial reflects the company's commitment to exploring sustainable practices. This move also follows similar efforts by other global steelmakers, including those in Japan and Tata Steel, to reduce their environmental impact.
