Sail nears completion of 2.0 MTPA pellet plant project at RSP

Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), a unit of SAIL, one of India’s leading steel producers, has achieved another significant milestone in its operational efficiency and sustainable steelmaking objectives.

Sail nears completion of 2.0 MTPA pellet plant project at RSP

The new 2.0 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Pellet Plant project under construction at the facility has entered an advanced stage of implementation. With major civil and structural works nearing completion, the project is regarded as a key milestone in the plant’s resource optimization and environmentally responsible production strategy.

Ultra-fine iron ore to be utilized efficiently

Scheduled for completion by February 2027, the project will enable the efficient utilization of ultra-fine iron ore generated during mining operations, which is unsuitable for conventional sinter production. The facility will convert this by-product material into high-quality blast furnace grade pellets.

A stable supply of high-quality pellets is expected to improve blast furnace burden quality and increase internal furnace permeability. This will reduce slag generation, decrease coke consumption, and minimize hot metal production costs. Through this investment, RSP will strengthen raw material security while optimizing the use of domestic resources.

Key milestone achieved with completion of 120-meter process stack

The pellet plant will utilize the globally recognized Grate-Kiln process technology, known for its reliability and operational efficiency. The project is being developed under the Construction, Operation and Maintenance (COM) model by a consortium comprising Orissa Metaliks Private Limited and Rosemary Sponge & Ispat Private Limited.

A substantial portion of the major civil and structural works has already been completed, while the integration of various circuits and units is progressing simultaneously. As part of the ongoing site activities, construction of the 120-meter-high process stack, one of the project’s most critical components, has been successfully completed.

Upon completion, the Pellet Plant is expected to become one of the most valuable assets supporting RSP’s cost-efficient, resource-conscious, and environmentally responsible steel production strategy. The facility is also expected to accelerate the plant’s alignment with global sustainability standards.
