SAIL continues supplying special-grade steel to Indian Navy

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), the country’s largest state-owned steel producer and a Maharatna company under the Ministry of Steel, continues to support India’s defense sector.

SAIL continues supplying special-grade steel to Indian Navy

The company has supplied around 8,000 tons of special-grade steel for the Indian Navy’s advanced warships, INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri.

Both frigates were officially commissioned into the naval fleet in Visakhapatnam during a ceremony attended by India’s Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

SAIL played a critical role in the construction of these modern frigates, collaborating with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE). The company supplied critical-grade hot-rolled plates and sheets sourced from its Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela facilities for use in shipbuilding.

By developing and supplying steel for the defense sector, SAIL has significantly contributed to the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” and “Make in India” initiatives, reducing import dependency. Its Special Plate Plant in Rourkela has so far produced over 100,000 tons of critical-grade steel for defense applications, including tanks, warships, and missiles.

The commissioning of INS Udaygiri and INS Himgiri demonstrates the strength and depth of India’s fully indigenous defense ecosystem. SAIL has also been a trusted partner in the Navy’s modernization drive, supplying critical steel for iconic warships such as INS Vikrant, INS Nilgiri, INS Ajay, INS Nistar, INS Arnala, INS Vindhyagiri, and INS Surat.
