Russian steel production shows a decline

Despite a general decline in steel production volumes in Russia between January and April 2024, some segments, such as steel pipe, showed growth in certain months.

In the first four months of 2024, 18.8 million tonnes of crude steel in ingots and semi-finished products were produced, 5.2% lower than in the same period of the previous year. Production volumes in April decreased by 10.9 % compared to April 2023 and by 6.3 % compared to March 2024.

Finished steel production in January-April 2024 was 20.5 million tonnes, down 3.3% from the same period last year. The decrease in April was 6% compared to April 2023 and 2.4% compared to March 2024.

Steel pipe production in April 2024 increased by 4.9% yoy, while it decreased by 1.8% compared to March 2024. In the first four months of 2024, steel pipe production was 4.2 million tonnes, down 5.5% compared to January-April 2023.

Pig iron production was 17.3 million tonnes in the first four months of 2024. Pig iron production in April decreased by 9.9% yoy and by 6.3% compared to March 2024.
