Europe's natural gas dependency on Russia is high. Europe imports about 40 percent of the natural gas it consumes, ie 175 billion cubic meters, from Russia. Austria, Slovakia, Moldova, Romania, Italy and the Czech Republic are among the countries that receive Russian gas through Ukraine. 2.5 months have passed in the Russo-Ukrainian War. The shipment of Russian natural gas to Europe has also decreased by about 50 percent in the last week.
Gas shipments via Ukraine increased in the first week of the war
Gazprom's daily natural gas shipments to the European Union (EU) via Ukraine were at the level of 74.4 million cubic meters as of January 1, AA reported. Since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine War on February 24, there has been an increase in gas flow to Europe. While there has been no significant change in gas flow since these dates, shipments were at the level of 100 to 110 million cubic meters per day until May 10. On May 10, this amount was at the level of 96 million cubic meters.
Informing that Russian gas purchases will be stopped reduced gas shipments
Gazprom Representative Sergey Kupriyanov said in a statement on May 10 that Ukraine was informed that it would stop purchasing Russian gas from the Sohranovka gas distribution point. On May 11, the day after the development, the amount of natural gas sent by the company to Europe via Ukraine decreased by 25 percent to 72 million cubic meters.
30 percent of the gas going to Europe passed through the Donbas region
Russia was shipping 30 percent of the gas it sent to Europe via Sohranovka, which is located in the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine and has a daily natural gas delivery capacity of approximately 30 million cubic meters.
Shipments to Poland stopped
Another development in the shipments of Russian gas was that Gazprom announced on May 12 that it would no longer use the Polish part of the Yamal-Europe pipeline, which carries Russian gas to Europe.
The Yamal-Europe pipeline is known as one of the important lines carrying Russian gas to Europe, as well as the pipelines in Ukraine and the Nord Stream pipeline. Despite this development, the company's natural gas shipments to Europe via Ukraine continued to decline in the following days.
