Employment in the global renewable energy sector has grown steadily since 2012, according to the Renewable Energy and Employment - Annual Assessment Report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the International Labor Organization (ILO).
While China ranks first with 4.7 million employments in renewable energy, 1.2 million people in Brazil, 838 thousand people in the USA and 726 thousand people in India got jobs in the sector. In the EU, 1.3 million jobs were created.
Thus, employment in the renewable energy sector in the world increased by 500 thousand last year compared to the previous year and reached 12 million people.
As of the end of 2020, 4 million people have found employment in the solar sector in renewable energy worldwide. It was followed by wind energy with 1 million 250 thousand people and biofuel sector with 2.4 million people.
According to the report, 32 percent of global renewable energy employment last year consisted of women. It is estimated that 43 million people will be employed in the renewable energy sector by 2050.
Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA, whose views are included in the report, stated that the employment policy in the renewable energy sector makes a significant contribution to achieving the goals of combating climate change, and said, "Increasing investments will provide socioeconomic benefits as well as energy transformation.
