Rebar and wire rod sector analysis in Poland 2023: Fluctuating prices and trade balance

While Poland's iron and steel industry followed a fluctuating course in wire rod and rebar prices in 2023, there was a significant decline in import and export figures.

Although Polish rebar prices fluctuated slightly in the first quarter of the year, they attracted attention with sudden ups and downs in the second half of the year.

Prices, which stood at $723 in January, fell to $628 in December, a drop of 13.12%. Prices for reinforcing steel, which fell rapidly from April, reached a low of $585 in September. After September, however, they began to rise again and ended the year at $628.

Prices for wire rod remained at an average level in the first quarter of the year. Prices, which stood at $730 in January, reached their lowest point of $623 in August. After August, wire rod prices recovered and peaked at $735 in April. At the end of the year, they were recorded at 707 $.

Imports of wire rod fell by 0.19% and exports by 33.28%

When we look at the import export figures, Poland's rebar imports in the January-November period decreased by 0.19% compared to the same period last year. Poland, which imported 360,365 tons of rebar in the 11-month period of last year, imported 359,683 tons of rebar in the said period of this year. In the said period, the highest import was recorded in November with 53,326 tons, while the lowest import was in January.

There was a large decrease in exports. Poland, which exported 318,727 tons of rebar in the said period last year, exported 212,657 tons of rebar with a decrease of 33.28% in the same period this year.

During this period, the highest export was seen in July with 30,575 tons, while the lowest export was in October with 11,299 tons.

Decline in wire rod imports and exports

Wire rod imports decreased by 36.45%. While it was 591,848 tons in the 11-month period of last year, this figure decreased to 376,108 tons in the same period this year. While the highest import was seen in March with 43,844 tons, the lowest import was in July with 23,671 tons.

Poland also recorded a decrease in wire rod exports in the said period of 2023. Poland, which exported 550,748 tons of wire rod last year, exported 431,471 tons of wire rod with a decrease of 21.66% in the same period this year. While the highest figure in exports was reached in February with 55,272 tons, the lowest export was in May with 27,801 tons.
