According to data compiled by SteelRadar from the Italian steel producers’ association, Federacciai, Italy’s crude steel production reached 2.0 million tonnes in May, up 3.1% year-on-year. However, the growth rate slowed compared to the 7.2% increase recorded in April.
In the January–May period, total crude steel production amounted to 9.6 million tonnes, indicating a 3.0% increase compared to the same period last year.
Performance varied across product segments in May, with an overall trend toward slower growth.
Production of hot-rolled long products totaled 1.2 million tonnes, up 0.4% year-on-year. Following a strong growth streak that lasted for ten consecutive months, long product output showed signs of stabilization. Nevertheless, at 1.2 million tonnes, production remained at one of its highest monthly levels since 2021.
In the first five months of the year, long product production reached 5.8 million tonnes, marking an 8.1% year-on-year increase.
Meanwhile, hot-rolled flat product production fell to 732,000 tonnes in May, down 12.0% year-on-year. The decline extended the downward trend that has persisted since January.
During the January–May period, flat product production totaled 3.8 million tonnes, representing a 7.6% decrease compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
