In a statement made against the backdrop of ongoing discussions regarding the performance of the railway network, it was emphasized that the current disruptions are directly affecting production processes.
Kerstin Maria Rippel, Managing Director of the German Steel Federation, stated that problems in the transportation of iron ore and coal by rail have reached a critical point for the sector. Rippel said that ongoing construction sites, operational disruptions, and insufficiently planned diversion routes are jeopardizing steel plants’ reliable access to raw materials, which has already led to some production interruptions.
Emphasizing that the modernization of railway infrastructure is a necessary and correct step, Rippel underlined that this process should not disrupt the supply chain of key industrial sectors. Rippel also called on rail infrastructure operator DB InfraGO to improve construction site management and ensure that supply flows, particularly to major industrial regions, continue in an uninterrupted and reliable manner.
The statement warned that if the current situation continues, production continuity in the steel sector could face broader risks.
