Primetals Technologies to modernize voestalpine’s hot strip mill in Linz

Austria-based Primetals Technologies will modernize the laminar strip cooling line at voestalpine Stahl GmbH’s hot strip mill in Linz, which has an annual capacity of 5 million tons.

Primetals Technologies to modernize voestalpine’s hot strip mill in Linz

The project represents a continuation of the long-standing collaboration between the two companies and focuses on continuously upgrading the Linz HSM with state-of-the-art mechanical and automation solutions. The modernization will enable the mill to maintain its technological leadership, meet rising quality standards, and help voestalpine preserve its leading position in the European flat steel market.

As part of the upgrade, the capacity of the existing strip cooling section will be increased, and the entire product range will be enhanced to meet demanding quality standards, particularly for high-strength steels. To achieve this, new laminar cooling headers, flow-controlled valves, roller table side guides, water knives, and a cross-spray system will be installed. The project scope also includes all related fluid systems as well as electrical and automation components.

The new cooling headers and flow control valves will feature a wide adjustment range, allowing the same equipment to apply both gentle and rapid cooling strategies and to be tailored to specific product requirements. The valves will operate with automatic characteristic curve recording for each flow.

The modernization will also provide metallurgically adapted and controlled strip cooling profiles across the strip’s width and length. Balanced heat flow between the top and bottom surfaces will enable the development of more advanced, high-performance steel grades, particularly for automotive applications.

Implementation of the project will take place during planned plant shutdowns of approximately 10 days in 2027 and 2028, minimizing disruption to production.
