POSCO and Volvo collaborate on next-generation construction equipment

POSCO Holdings, one of South Korea’s leading steel producers, and Volvo Group Korea have entered into a collaboration to develop high-performance materials and manufacturing technologies for use in next-generation construction equipment. The two companies have launched joint R&D activities under a memorandum of understanding signed at Volvo’s facility in Changwon.

POSCO and Volvo collaborate on next-generation construction equipment

The parties will focus particularly on weight reduction and the use of high-strength materials, which are critical in the transition to electric and carbon-neutral equipment. In this context, the aim is to reduce the structural weight of equipment through the use of high-strength steel and to optimize production processes.

Under the cooperation framework, Volvo Korea will lead the equipment development process, providing technical data and application guidance. POSCO, on the other hand, will leverage its expertise in steel and material technologies to develop next-generation materials and production methods, while supporting R&D activities.

The partnership will also include the sharing of material and technological expertise, joint research on next-generation equipment, field testing and technical validation of newly developed materials, as well as technical seminars and enhanced knowledge exchange.

As electrification and pressure to reduce carbon emissions increase in the construction equipment sector, the demand for lightweight and durable materials is becoming more prominent. This collaboration is expected to create a competitive advantage in the industry.

The companies plan to gradually implement the developed technologies in Volvo excavators produced at the Changwon facility, aiming to enhance the durability and performance of the equipment.

Kang Ho-jin, Vice President of R&D at Volvo Korea, stated that the integration of material and manufacturing technologies plays a critical role in the development of next-generation equipment, adding that the collaboration with POSCO will help improve both performance and product competitiveness.
