North Carolina-based Nucor Corporation has announced that its new steel plant in Frostproof, Polk County, near Charlotte, will open before the end of this year. The construction of the facility was first announced in early 2018, and it is considered the biggest industrial development in Polk County in the last 45 years.
According to the company, the plant is being built with an investment of around $240 million. The 620,000 square-foot factory will employ a total of 250 workers with an average annual salary of $68,000, significantly higher than Polk's average annual salary of $41,047.
The latest reports show that Nucor has completed 75% of its hiring, including factory workers, office staff, and other support personnel. Technical training for the operational staff will be provided at Nucor's other facilities nationwide. Drew Wilcox, the plant's Vice President and General Manager, said the plant should reach its full workforce next year.
The company had initially planned to open the factory this summer, but permit formalities caused delays in the construction. The micro-mill will primarily produce steel rebar from scrap steel for the construction industry.
