Nucor expands steel plant
Nucor Steel Kingman held a public event to discuss the company's expansion of its Kingman steel plant operation.
Earlier this month, Nucor announced plans for a $100 million expansion to add a steel mill that would have the capacity to produce 600,000 tons of recycled steel each year.
The project is expected to create about 140 new full-time jobs; The company said the average annual pay for these jobs would be about $85,000.
Nucor Steel Kingman produces wire rod and rebar, which are mainly used in concrete reinforcement for the construction of roads, buildings, bridges and other structures.
Nucor recycles steel by recycling scrap metal in electric arc furnaces to make new steel products, making it one of the world's most sustainable steel producers, according to the company.
Nucor said last year's production averaged 98.5% recycled content.
Nucor has previously said the steel mill is expected to be operational by 2024.
Leon Topalian, president and CEO of Nucor Corp., said, "This investment in a new steel mill at our Arizona bar plant is part of our strategy to grow our core steelmaking business and will help us maintain our market leadership in steel bar manufacturing." Said.
Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Nucor operates 15 rod rolling mills across the U.S.
About 80 people currently work at the Kingman mill, so the expansion is expected to nearly triple the local workforce.
"The addition of new steel mill capacity will help meet the growing demand for steel bar products in the Western region, one of the fastest-growing regions in the U.S.," Topalian said.
