Norwegian Hydrogen and GreenIron H2 partnered for green hydrogen metal production

Norwegian Hydrogen, based in Norway, and GreenIron H2, based in Sweden, have signed a strategic agreement to jointly establish green hydrogen production facilities and direct reduction furnaces.

Norwegian Hydrogen and GreenIron H2 partnered for green hydrogen metal production

This collaboration is based on the partnership announced last October. Within the scope of the project, green hydrogen produced at Norwegian Hydrogen’s facility in Hellesylt, Norway, will be delivered to GreenIron’s first full-scale metal reduction furnace in Sandviken. This step also presents an opportunity to increase hydrogen use in surrounding industries.

GreenIron’s patented technology reduces metal oxides with green hydrogen without producing CO₂ emissions, enabling fossil-free metal production. A single furnace is expected to reduce approximately 56,000 tons of carbon emissions annually compared to traditional coal-based methods. The only byproduct of the process is water. Scaling up to 300 furnaces would correspond to about 35% of Sweden’s annual CO₂ emissions.

Jens Berge, CEO of Norwegian Hydrogen, emphasized that the collaboration creates a scalable model for hydrogen-based industrial transformation, building on existing plant experience and the partnership with GreenIron.

Additionally, Karmsund Hydrogen, owned by Norwegian Hydrogen, together with Sigma and Karmsund Group, is partnering with HydePoint to build a green hydrogen facility in Karmsund, with initial deliveries planned for 2028.

In January, GreenIron selected ABB as the solution partner for automation and control systems at its Sandviken facility.
