Nippon Steel Kyushu begins converting blast furnace to electric arc furnace at its plant

Nippon Steel Corporation announced that it has begun construction work to transition from blast furnace-based production to an electric arc furnace (EAF) process at its Yawata facility in the Kyushu Works, located in Japan, as part of its carbon emission reduction targets.

Nippon Steel Kyushu begins converting blast furnace to electric arc furnace at its plant

Nippon Steel Corporation outlined its “Nippon Steel Carbon Neutral Vision 2050,” announced in March 2021, under which it is focusing on three innovative technologies to achieve carbon neutrality. As part of this strategy, the company has launched new construction, capacity expansion, renovation, and restart projects across three locations.

The company’s carbon neutrality roadmap is based on three pillars: high-quality steel production using large-scale electric arc furnaces, hydrogen-based direct reduced iron production, and hydrogen reduction technologies in blast furnaces. Investments under this plan will be carried out at the Yawata area of the Kyushu Works, the Hirohata area of the Setouchi Works, and the Shunan facility of the Yamaguchi Works, all located in Japan.

One of the key projects is the transformation at the Yawata facility of the Kyushu Works, which involves shifting from a blast furnace process to an electric arc furnace (EAF) process. The company stated that this project is the first of its kind in the world, as it establishes an integrated production and mass production system for high-quality steel using large-scale electric arc furnaces.

A groundbreaking ceremony marking the start of the investment was held at the Yawata site, attended by figures including Mitsuaki Hoshino, Seitaro Hattori, and Kazuhisa Takeuchi.

Kyushu Steel Works General Manager and Executive Officer Masahiro Nakata stated that the facility is building an integrated system for high-quality steel production using large electric arc furnaces. He added that together with the Yawata and Oita regions, the company aims to become a world-leading production base in the carbon-neutral era, emphasizing the importance of public–private partnerships and local community support in realizing the project.

Under this vision, Nippon Steel aims to create value in two main areas: providing high-performance steel products and solutions that contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions across society, and producing so-called “GX steel” through decarbonized steel production processes.
