In his written statement, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that the General Directorate of Turkish State Railways (TCDD) has started producing its own energy by commissioning solar power plants (SPPs).
Uraloğlu noted that in the first phase, 4 plants were commissioned at Balıkesir, Selçuk, Basmane stations, and the Taşlıca Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Workshop in Gaziantep, adding, "With the plants under construction, 318,525,125 kilowatt-hours of electricity will be generated annually."
Uraloğlu stated that the electricity obtained from these plants has begun to be used and that railways continue to be a pioneer not only in transportation but also in environmentally conscious energy policies.
Explaining that projects are being carried out to further contribute to the country's energy transformation process by integrating renewable energy investments with railway transportation, Uraloğlu said, "In the first phase, 4 SPP projects have been commissioned. TCDD meets its energy needs from these and transfers the surplus to the grid, generating revenue for the public. Thanks to these facilities, 1.5 billion Turkish lira will remain in the state treasury each year."
"SPPs are being installed at 26 stations in Marmaray"
Uraloğlu drew attention to the ongoing works for the establishment of three SPPs with a total installed capacity of 200 megawatts by TCDD.
He stated that these plant works continue in Ankara-Kocahacılı, Sivas-Sarıdemir, and Kahramanmaraş-Narlı, emphasizing that upon completion of the projects, by the end of 2029, 25% of the electricity needed at TCDD catenary facilities will be met from renewable energy.
Uraloğlu highlighted that TCDD is increasing its renewable energy investments and that the construction works of the Marmaray Roof SPP Project continue, noting:
"As part of the project, we are installing SPPs with a capacity of 10.13 megawatts at 26 train stations in Marmaray. The energy needed for operation and safety will be produced at the energy plants on the station roofs. These plants will generate over 15 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy annually. Upon completion of the project, 60% of Marmaray's energy needs will be met. We are taking determined steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in railway transportation. In the medium term, TCDD aims to meet 35% of its electricity needs from renewable sources. These investments will make a strong contribution to our country's energy transformation process."
