Leftist candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, or Lula for short, won the elections, surpassing the country's current leader, Jair Bolsonaro.
Lula received 50.83 percent of the votes, counting 99 percent.
The new head of state will take over on January 1, 2023.
In his first speech, Lula said that the most urgent task is to end hunger, noting that the people want to live well and have hope again. Lula stated that the destruction in the Amazon forests will also end.
The country's right-wing leader, Jair Bolsonaro, said the elections he ran against his left-wing rival, Luiz Inacio da Silva, would be a battle between "good and evil".
Former president Lula, on the other hand, was ahead in the opinion polls and described the race as a struggle "between democracy and authoritarianism".
Lula supporters poured into the streets as the election results began to be announced. With the finalization of the victory, enthusiasm dominated the streets.
Lula: People want books, not guns
"The Brazilian people want to have hope again. The people want books, not guns. They want to live well, eat well, have a job and have access to education," Lula said in his first speech after his election victory.

Saying that he wants to defeat racism, Lula noted that he aims to ensure that white, black or indigenous peoples have equal rights and opportunities.
"We are one people," said Lula, saying there are no "two Brazils".
Lula stated that the deforestation and destruction that increased in the Amazon forests during the Bolsonaro era will also come to an end.

The USA is the leading country among the countries that closely monitor the Brazilian elections.
US President Joe Biden issued a congratulatory message after the election results were announced.
"This will be one of the most dramatic elections of the 21st century," Steve Bannon, an adviser to former President Donald Trump, told the BBC.
Senator Patrick Leahy, one of the politicians of the Democratic Party closely related to Brazil, said, "The fate of Brazilian democracy and the relations of the USA with this country will be determined by this election."
French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are among the leaders who issued a congratulatory message.
Who is Lula da Silva?
Lula da Silva was president of Brazil for eight years until 2011.
As a former metal worker and union leader, he made his name during the strikes of the 1970s. These actions targeted the military authority in Brazil and demanded higher wages.
During his presidency, he managed to reduce the poverty level in Brazil by using resources for education and development.
In 2016, the prosecution filed a lawsuit against Lula da Silva and her husband on charges of involvement in corruption. He was sentenced to 9 years and 6 months in prison in 2017. She went to jail in 2018 but her conviction was later dropped.
Lula, on the other hand, denied the allegations of abuse of power and argued that the case was political.
Lula was unable to run in the 2018 elections, as he was in prison and could not run. Fernando Haddad of the Labor Party, to which he belonged, was unable to persuade left-wing voters as Lula did.
Jair Bolsonaro, a far-right lawmaker and retired military officer, was appointed, amid widespread discontent with mainstream politicians and anger at the corruption scandals that have tarnished the Labor Party.
