Liberty Steel restarts blast furnace in Galati

UK Liberty Steel is restarting blast furnace No. 5 at its Galati steel plant in Romania.

Liberty Steel restarts blast furnace in Galati

The company has adjusted its production plans and product portfolio to ensure a smooth restart.

This blast furnace is the only one in operation and has an annual capacity of over 2 million tons. Due to bad weather and low water levels in the Danube, raw material could not be shipped and the furnace was shut down from the beginning of October.

According to the data, European steel production decreased by 9.1% to 96.2 million tons in January-September 2023 due to weak demand. High energy costs and interest rates also weighed heavily on steel industries.

In order to remain competitive in the European market, Liberty Steel urged the Romanian government to create new policies for energy-intensive users, considering that the cost of energy accounts for 40% of the cost of steel production, compared to only 8% in 2019.
