In a statement, the company announced that the restarted operations will play a key role in the supply of steel critical for Romania's development, defense and security. LIBERTY Galați is one of the largest taxpayers in the country, with an annual tax contribution of around 100 million euros.
Radu Ionescu, Managing Director of LIBERTY Galați, stated: “With Blast Furnace No. 5 back in operation and rolling mills back in production, we will continue to offer our customers quality Romanian steel. We will continue to support strategic sectors.”
Remus Borza, President of EuroInsol, added: “The resumption of production is a great achievement after a production gap of almost a year, following extensive negotiations and cost optimizations. LIBERTY Galați continues to be a significant steel producer not only for Romania, but for the whole of Europe.”
Technical details of the production process were also included. It was announced that hot metal production started at 08.00 a.m. from the blast furnace, which was charged at the beginning of this week, while the first production batch is expected tomorrow. Steel production is expected to start in 3-4 days. Initially, 3,800 tons of hot metal (approximately 4,300 tons of steel) will be produced daily, which is expected to increase to 5,500 tons of hot metal over time.
The company also expects the restructuring plan to be approved by the Galați Court by July 5.
Going forward, the company announced that its objectives include expanding its order portfolio in areas such as defense, construction, infrastructure and shipbuilding, optimizing costs and achieving positive EBITDA over the next two years. It also added that it is developing a strong energy plan to reduce the pressure from energy prices.
