July saw a record number of containers loaded onto ships at ports

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that Türkiye had surpassed an important milestone in maritime trade, announcing that container loading onto ships at ports reached an all-time high of 634,879 TEU in July 2025.

The total number of containers handled at ports in the same month increased by 14.5% compared to the same period last year, reaching 1,259,801 TEU.

Uraloğlu shared the maritime statistics for July with the public in a written statement. Emphasizing that they are working diligently to increase Türkiye's share of maritime trade, Uraloğlu reported that the total number of containers handled at ports in the first seven months of the year was 8,273,352 TEU, representing a 5% increase compared to the same period last year.

The amount of cargo handled at ports in July was recorded as 47,679,802 tons, while this figure reached 322,818,212 tons in the first seven months of the year. The amount of cargo transported from ports to foreign ports last month increased by 5% compared to the same month in 2024, reaching 12 million 493 thousand 192 tons. The amount of cargo arriving in Türkiye from foreign ports increased by 13.5%, reaching 23 million 98 thousand 434 tons. In July, total international cargo transportation by sea increased by 10.4% compared to the same month last year, reaching 35,591,626 tons.

The highest volume of cargo handling on a regional basis was recorded in July at 7,664,573 tons at port facilities operating within the administrative boundaries of the Kocaeli Regional Port Authority. Kocaeli was followed by Aliağa with 7,658,237 tons and İskenderun Regional Port Authority with 6,178,076 tons. During the same period, transit cargo transportation by sea amounted to 5,529,163 tons, while coastal transportation reached 6,559,013 tons.

In July, the most notable increase in cargo types was observed in unprocessed coal. This product, which saw an increase of 1,373,291 tons compared to the previous month, became one of the most handled products in ports with a total of 3,235,769 tons. Among cargo transported by sea to foreign countries, Portland cement took the top spot with 1 million 86 thousand 916 tons, followed by clinker and fuel oil. Among cargo arriving from foreign countries, unprocessed coal took the top spot with 3 million 97 thousand 668 tons, followed by crude oil and scrap iron.

Uraloğlu noted that the highest volume of exports by sea in July was to Italy, followed by the United States and Spain. Among cargoes arriving at ports by sea, Russia was recorded as the top destination.
