JSW Steel signs agreement for a 300,000-ton green methanol project in India

India-based JSW Steel Ltd announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Bharatia and Carbon Iceland International to develop a green methanol production facility in the country with an annual capacity of 300,000 tons.

JSW Steel signs agreement for a 300,000-ton green methanol project in India

In its stock exchange filing, the company stated that the project aims to capture carbon dioxide emissions generated at its Raigad facility in the western state of Maharashtra and convert them into green methanol using renewable energy-based hydrogen produced from green hydrogen.

JSW Steel said that the initiative aims to serve as a model demonstrating how industrial emissions can be transformed into low-carbon fuels and chemical feedstocks.

Under the signed agreement, JSW Steel will provide the industrial infrastructure required for the project. Bharatia will be responsible for project development, execution, and financing activities. Carbon Iceland International will provide technological support for carbon capture integration and low-carbon fuel (e-fuel) production.

Bharatia was described as a non-profit organization focused on scaling technology-driven solutions in emerging markets.

JSW Steel is the flagship company of the JSW Group, which operates across multiple sectors including energy, infrastructure, cement, paints, real estate, and defense.

Meanwhile, JSW Energy, a subsidiary of the JSW Group, commissioned a green hydrogen production facility with an annual capacity of 3,800 tons at its Vijayanagar site in the state of Karnataka in November 2025. The hydrogen produced at this facility has been supplied to the nearby JSW Steel plant for use in low-carbon steel production.
