Germany reportedly increased its scrap exports to third countries by 9.2% to 1.44 million tons in 2023 compared to 2022. Many scrap companies in the country saw their exports decrease by 1.5% to 7.8 million tons in 2023 compared to 2022.

According to SteelRadar data, Germany increased its exports by 1.9% in 2021, but experienced a 9.9% decrease in 2022. In January 2024, scrap exports decreased by 5.9% to 97.6 thousand tons compared to the same month in 2023.

The main export destinations for products shipped from Germany were the Netherlands with 1.64 million tons, Türkiye with 699.3 thousand tons and India with 415.32 thousand tons, while Germany's scrap imports in 2023 decreased by 21% compared to 2022.

Sources said that Germany imported 334.2 thousand tons of scrap from third countries and 3.14 million tons from the EU, down 21% to 3.48 million tons in 2023 compared to 2022. Among the suppliers were the Czech Republic with 853.81 thousand tons, the Netherlands with 813.1 thousand tons and Poland with 510.41 thousand tons.

Germany's current E40 scrap market has been stagnant, with scrap trading at €378 during March and stabilizing as of April 1, according to SteelRadar data. Sources underlined that the steel market across Europe experienced a downturn in March and that the uncertainty in the scrap market continues.
