IMF blocks Afghanistan's access to funding sources

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced that Afghanistan will not be able to access other IMF resources with its reserve currency called special drawing right (SDR).

IMF blocks Afghanistan's access to funding sources

In the statement made by the spokesperson of the IMF, it was noted that the views of the international community, as always, guide the IMF.

"There is currently no clarity in the international community about government recognition in Afghanistan and as a result the country cannot access SDRs or other IMF resources," the statement said. expression was used.

The bulk of the Afghan government's cash reserves are outside the country.

On the other hand, The New York Times reported that the administration of US President Joe Biden was working to prevent the Taliban's allocation of over $400 million SDR, which the IMF plans to provide to Afghanistan next week.

Former Afghan Central Bank (DAB) Chairman Achmel Ahmadi, who left the country after Afghanistan came under the control of the Taliban, reported that most of the Afghan government's $9 billion cash reserves were kept abroad.

Ahmadi noted that approximately $7 billion of this money is kept at the US Federal Reserve (Fed) in the form of bonds, cash, gold and other types of investments, and the rest is in Swiss Bank for International Settlements and other international accounts.

In the news that The Washington Post cited sources close to the subject yesterday, it was reported that the Biden administration blocked the Taliban's access to billions of dollars held in US institutions by freezing the Afghan government's reserves in US banks on Sunday.

The Taliban's domination of Afghanistan

Within the framework of the peace agreement reached between the USA and the Taliban in February 2020, the process of withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan began this year.

While the agreement stipulated not to attack foreign forces, it did not make provision for the actions of the Taliban against Afghan security forces.

Continuing the negotiations with the Afghan government in Doha, the Taliban have simultaneously dominated many districts and provincial centers in Afghanistan with violent attacks since June.

Besieging the capital Kabul, the Taliban took control of the city without conflict after President Ashraf Ghani left the country on 15 August.
