Hydnum Steel secured 500 MW of electricity supply for its clean steel plant in Spain

Hydnum Steel obtained grid connection permission at the Brazatortas node in Ciudad Real province, taking a significant step in the construction of Spain’s first clean steel plant.

Hydnum Steel secured 500 MW of electricity supply for its clean steel plant in Spain

According to the announcement published in the Official Gazette, the company has been allocated 500 MW of electricity capacity; this is considered sufficient to secure the supply for the electric arc furnace and reinforces the project's pioneering status in the Iberian Peninsula.

Hydnum Steel’s fully digitally integrated facility will produce hot-rolled steel coils with an environmentally and economically focused, efficient, and sustainable production approach. While offering a solution for steel consumers required to reduce carbon emissions, the plant aims to meet the demand for flat steel, which is in short supply in the EU. In the first phase, the company plans an annual production of 1.5 million tonnes, with projections indicating that final production could reach 2.7 million tonnes.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, and the investment exceeding €1.5 billion is expected to create more than 400 direct jobs in the first phase. At full capacity, this figure is anticipated to exceed 1,000.

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition prioritizes emission-reducing projects in the connection process, while Hydnum Steel’s investment will use 100% renewable energy and achieve a 98% reduction in emissions compared to traditional blast furnace steel production. This positions the company to strengthen its role as a leading supplier of clean steel in Europe.
