Making sustainability an integral part of its business model through its regenerative business approach, Tosyalı continues to create added value for the Turkish economy not only through its green steel investments but also through circular production practices that bring by-products generated during production back into the economy.
In line with this approach, the high-performance slag-based asphalt solutions developed by Tosyalı Harsco, one of Tosyalı's specialized recycling companies, are now being preferred for the transportation infrastructure of different cities following their initial applications.
Safer, longer-lasting and more sustainable roads
One of the latest projects in this field was carried out on Gazanfer Bilge Boulevard (Santral Ramp) as part of the infrastructure improvement works conducted by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, in cooperation with Tosyalı Harsco and Simgemat.
Within the scope of the project, steelmaking slag supplied by Tosyalı Harsco was transformed into an artificial stone mastic asphalt by Simgemat using Steelphalt technology developed by Harsco, the company's UK-based subsidiary, and used in the project.
Developed for use on routes exposed to heavy commercial vehicle traffic and steep gradients, this high-performance modified asphalt application (SteelSurf) stands out with its high resistance to deformation, low permeability and long service life. At the same time, its high wear resistance reduces road maintenance requirements while contributing to driving safety and comfort. By utilizing steelmaking slag in the asphalt mixture, the need for natural aggregates is reduced, making a significant contribution to the conservation of natural resources and the circular economy. Produced using a high proportion of recycled steel slag aggregate, this solution is among the innovative applications that reduce environmental impact in road construction.
Proven innovative solution expands with new projects
Tosyalı had previously demonstrated that its circular production approach could be integrated into transportation infrastructure through Türkiye's first slag-based asphalt application implemented on the TEM Motorway between the Gebze Junction and Dilovası Junction. Following its proven performance, this innovative solution continues to be used under different road conditions. The new application on Gazanfer Bilge Boulevard, one of Kocaeli's busiest and steepest routes, is an important example demonstrating that this environmentally friendly solution is expanding its use in real urban infrastructure.
With its high performance, long service life and environmentally friendly structure, slag-based asphalt solutions are expected to become an increasingly widespread and preferred application in the sustainable transportation infrastructure of the future.
Tosyalı Harsco transforms the circular economy into added value
Operating as a joint venture between Tosyalı and US-based Harsco, Tosyalı Harsco provides innovative recycling solutions for the iron and steel industry as well as the aluminium, copper, nickel, ferrochrome and cement sectors. The company processes slag generated during production using advanced technologies and transforms it into high value-added raw materials for various applications, including asphalt and road construction, cement additives, fertilizer production, aggregates and railway ballast.
Thanks to advanced processing technologies developed under its zero-waste approach and the proprietary Bloodhound software developed within the company, metallic iron contained in the slag is monitored in real time, reducing the metal content to a minimum level. As a result, the recycled slag obtained serves as a strong alternative to natural aggregates with its high wear resistance, low water permeability and durability. Slag-based stone mastic asphalt offers an innovative solution for sustainable transportation infrastructure with its long service life, enhanced driving safety under rainy weather conditions and high mechanical strength
