The World Steel Association (WorldSteel) announced crude steel production figures for May 2025. Accordingly, world crude steel production in 69 countries amounted to 158.8 million tons (Mt) in May 2025, down 3.8% y/y.
On a regional basis, Africa's crude steel production increased by 5.5% y/y to 1.9 million tons. In Asia and Oceania, production decreased by 4.7% to 116.6 million tons. Production in the European Union (27 countries) decreased by 3.1% to 11.4 million tons. In other parts of Europe, production decreased by 8.8% to 3.6 million tons.
Crude steel production in the Middle East increased by 5.3% to 5.4 million tons. In North America, production increased by 3.4% to 9.5 million tons. Production in Russia, other CIS countries and Ukraine decreased by 8.1% to 7 million tons. In South America, production increased by 4.2% to 3.4 million tons.
On a country basis, China's crude steel production decreased by 6.9% y/y to 86.6 million tons in May. India's production increased by 9.7% to 13.5 million tons. Production in Japan decreased by 4.7% to 6.8 million tons. US production increased by 1.7% to 7 million tons. Russia's production is estimated at 5.8 million tons, a decrease of 6.9%.
South Korea's production decreased by 1.7% to 5.1 million tons, while Türkiye's production decreased by 2.8% to 3.1 million tons. In Germany, production decreased by 6.4% to 3 million tons. Iran's production increased by 4.5% to 3.4 million tons, while Brazil's production increased by 5% to 2.7 million tons.
