Crude steel production in Germany decreased by 10.1% to 2.95 million tons in April 2025 compared to the same month of the previous year.
According to data released by the German Steel Industry Association (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl), total production in the January-April period of the year was 11.4 million tons, a decrease of nearly 12%.
Steel production by basic oxygen furnaces (BOF) decreased by 12.6% to just over 2 million tons in April, while the amount of steel produced by electric arc furnaces (EAF) decreased by 4.3% to 946 thousand tons. Pig iron production decreased by 11.2% to 1.86 million tons in the same period.
Production of hot-rolled steel products decreased by 8.6% to 2.49 million tons in April.
Industry officials stated that this decline in production was due to energy costs and the slowdown in global demand.
Production data for the January-April period also paint a worrying picture for the industry. BOF production decreased by 14.4% to 7.7 million tons, EAF production by 5.9% to 3.6 million tons and pig iron production by 14.6% to 7.1 million tons. Production of hot rolled products decreased by 10.4% to 10.1 million tons.
