According to data released by the German Steel Industry Association (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl), pressures on steel production in Germany continued in May 2025. The country's total crude steel production decreased by 6.4% y/y to around 2.98 million tons.
The contraction in BOF steel production was particularly noteworthy in this decline. BOF production decreased by 13.1% to 1.94 million tons in May.
On the other hand, production at scrap-based EAF plants increased for the first time this year. The amount of steel produced by EAF increased by 9.3% to 1.04 million tons in May. However, this increase is considered as a limited recovery as it still comes from a low base level.
Pig iron production also decreased by 9.8% to 1.83 million tons in the same period. The output of hot-rolled steel products, on the other hand, reached 2.66 million tons, with a slight increase of only 0.5%.
Looking at the first five months of 2025, Germany's total crude steel production decreased by 10.8% to 14.43 million tons. During this period, BOF steel production decreased by 14.2% to 9.7 million tons, while EAF steel production decreased by 2.9% to 4.73 million tons. During the same period, pig iron production decreased by 13.7% to 9 million tons and hot rolled products production decreased by 8.3% to 12.79 million tons.
