France's crude steel production decreased by 17.36% in 2023 over the previous year, from 12.1 mt to 10 mt, according to global crude steel data published by Worldsteel (World Steel Association). The country ranked 19th in the world.
France's crude steel production for the last two years has decreased by almost 40%, whereas when we look at the crude steel production numbers for a total of 3 years, France ranked 19th in 2021, producing 13.9 mt of crude steel, and in 2022, this figure was 12.1.
In 2021, the country ranked 18th with 13.9 million tons of crude steel production.
Considering the data between the last two years, it is clear that there has been a significant decrease in crude steel production in France. The reasons for a total decline of 17.4 percent in production between 2023 and 2022 included economic fluctuations in the global context, decreases in demand, and increases in energy costs.
SteelRadar sources expect a decrease in steel and crude steel production in 2024, not only for France but also for Europe as a whole. With continued weak demand forecast, many producers will attempt to diversify their operations into "green" production, the sources added.
Sources also highlighted the possibility that major steelmakers such as ArcelorMittal may reduce their production volumes in order to keep selling prices high.
