Addressing participants at the summit organized by SteelRadar, where İzmir Demir Çelik was the “Platinum + Lanyard” (Main) sponsor, Yazar recalled that this year’s organization was held under the motto “Stronger Together, the Future of Steel” and greeted all domestic and international industry stakeholders.
“The number of publicly listed companies in our group will increase to three”
Providing information about the deep-rooted history and production strength of İzmir Demir Çelik Sanayi A.Ş., Yazar reminded that the company, founded in 1975, has been traded on the stock exchange since January 24, 1986, following the establishment of Borsa İstanbul.
Referring to the company’s current capacity and investments, Yazar said:
“With the investment we commissioned in April 2024 in order to further enhance our production power, our crude steel capacity has reached 3.1 million tons. Our construction steel capacity is 1.4 million tons, while our medium section production capacity is 400 thousand tons. With our high value-added product group, we have a section production line preferred abroad. We use billet and section production both to meet the needs of our own rolling mills and for sales.”
Emphasizing that they also attach importance to renewable energy investments, Yazar stated that they contribute to Türkiye’s energy needs through their 143 MW solar energy investment located in Kula, Manisa.
Stating that they employ approximately 2,500 people, Yazar noted that the group is in a new public offering process and said:
“Our İDÇ port operation, with a handling capacity of 7.5 million tons, is an important part of our organization. We submitted our IPO application for this operation on May 11. We expect our company to go public within approximately one year. Thus, the number of publicly listed companies in our group will increase to three.”
“Türkiye continues to lead Europe in steel production”
Making evaluations regarding the current data of the Turkish steel industry and its position in the global market, Feyyaz Yazar stated that according to 2025 data, Türkiye’s crude steel production reached 38 million tons.
Pointing out that a 2% decline was experienced in global crude steel production, Yazar noted that Türkiye continues to rank first in Europe and maintains its position as the world’s seventh-largest steel producer.
Despite the strong course in production volume, Yazar stated that there has not been a significant change in capacity utilization rates, adding that the rate, which stood at 62% in previous years, has currently stabilized at 61.6%.
“Our biggest problem is semi-finished product imports”
Addressing the upward trend in the sector’s import figures and commercial challenges, Yazar stated that imports increased by 6.3% from 7.9 million tons to 8.4 million tons compared to 2024.
Expressing that the upward trend has continued into the new year, Yazar said:
“When we look at the first three months of 2026, imports increased by 5.4% from 1.8 million tons to 1.9 million tons. The biggest problem in our sector is semi-finished product imports, and various requests regarding this issue are being conveyed to the relevant ministries.”
Emphasizing that the Turkish steel industry is struggling with numerous regulations, withholding practices, and restrictions both domestically and internationally, Feyyaz Yazar concluded his remarks as follows:
“On one hand, the limitations brought by the economic program, and on the other hand, the global conjuncture force the Turkish steel industry to struggle in different ways. However, I believe that the knowledge and experience possessed by the Turkish steel industry have the energy to overcome these problems. For this, the sector needs to act together more, maintain its unity, and demonstrate this common will in different areas.”
