Turkish producers' total HRC exports in the January-November period decreased by 11.5 percent year on year to 2.4 million metric tons, largely due to trade barriers from the European Union, traditionally Turkey's top HRC export destination.
Quotas and the European Commission's strict anti-dumping duties on HRC imports from Turkey, which came into effect on July 5, have restricted Turkish producers' exports to the region, especially in 2021.
According to the latest monthly Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) data sent to S&P Global Platts on December 31, exports to Italy, which has traditionally been Turkey's top HRC export destination, amounted to 578,600 mt in the January-November 2021 period, down 30% year on year. a regressed. Exports to Spain, another Southern European country, increased by 6.6% to 339,000 mt during this period.
Turkish mills' HRC exports to Belgium stood at 163,300 mt, up 85% year on year in the first eleven months, well above last year's, while their exports to other European countries remained significantly lower due to quotas and AD duty.
Despite the decline in exports to the EU, Turkish mills were able to increase their HRC shipments to the USA, as prices there remained well above other market prices, especially in the first half of the year. Turkish mills' eleven-month HRC exports to the US reached 343,000 mt, a sharp increase from the 11,200 mt exported in January-November 2020.
Turkish producers also increased their HRC exports to another North American country, Canada, in January-November, with 135,500 mt shipments compared to zero in the same period of the previous year.
