Within the scope of the program where President Erdoğan held talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, bilateral business meetings were held between Italian companies and our companies in the private sector delegation on April 29.
Commenting on his visit to Italy, which is one of Türkiye's leading trade partners in iron and steel and non-ferrous metals exports, Ertan stated: "As of the first quarter of 2025, Italy is the country to which we export the most in Türkiye's iron and steel and non-ferrous metals exports. After a long period, we see that Italy has replaced Germany as our most exported market. In terms of all sectors, the Steel, Cement and Ferrous and Non-ferrous Metals sectors are in the first three places in our country's exports to Italy. In terms of exports from the Aegean Region, Italy is our third largest market after Morocco and Germany, while profiles, construction parts and wire rod are among the most exported products. As can be understood from this, the iron and steel sector has a very important place in our country's trade with Italy. For this reason, we reiterate our demand for the removal of the quotas imposed by the European Union on our iron and steel products in order to strengthen our mutual trade as two countries, and to provide flexibility in visa issues, which is essential for exports."
Stating that President Erdoğan's new trade volume target with Prime Minister Meloni was determined as 40 billion dollars, Ertan continued: "As exporter companies, we attach great importance to the issues expressed by our President at the Business Forum and I would like to thank them for conveying our demands to the relevant authorities. For example, we follow the trade wars over customs tariffs and try to turn them into opportunities for both exports and the economy of our country. In this period, while Italy is an important EU market for us, it is important for Italy to embrace our country as an investment center for access to Asia and the Eastern Regions. On the other hand, partnerships in the fields of security, defense, green energy, digital technologies, smart cities and space technologies will benefit the trade of both countries. As we have recently expressed at the Finland Business Forum and in all visits to EU countries, it has been stated again that the customs union needs to be updated in accordance with the changing global economic conditions in order for our commercial and economic relations to reach their potential, and we hope that the issue will be resolved as soon as possible.
