In an interview on CNN, Ontario Premier Doug Ford called on Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to retaliate in kind after the United States doubled tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50%. “Either you stand with Canada and protect people's jobs or you sit back and watch,” Ford told Canadian Prime Minister Carney.
Ford suggested adding another 25% on top of the tariffs, arguing that they should be equalized with the tariffs imposed by the United States. In response, Prime Minister Carney did not rush to retaliate, saying they were close to trade talks.
Ford, who is also considering imposing tariffs on electricity exports from Ontario to the US, said that if an agreement is not reached, these and other measures could be implemented. Ford emphasized that trade with the Trump administration is “five steps forward, ten steps back.”
Ford will meet with Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc on his return from Washington and will closely follow new developments.
