Domestic automobile move from HABAŞ: Former Honda factory comes to life again

The factory in Kocaeli Çayırova, which Japanese automotive giant Honda closed in 2021, is opening the door to a new era in Türkiye's domestic automobile production. For 24 years, the factory, which produced vehicles for both the domestic market and Europe, was closed after Honda's decision to withdraw from Turkey, and was soon acquired by HABAŞ, one of Türkiye's most important industrial organizations.

Domestic automobile move from HABAŞ: Former Honda factory comes to life again

Under the leadership of Mehmet Rüştü Başaran, the 79-year-old boss of HABAŞ, the project will evolve the factory into a domestic automobile production facility equipped with electric and hybrid engine options. Moreover, it is stated that the infrastructure of the factory was created in cooperation with a Chinese automotive company and the design of the vehicle belongs entirely to HABAŞ.

According to the information provided by journalist Fatih Altaylı, the factory was first considered for truck production, and even possible collaborations with brands such as Nissan and Mercedes were on the agenda. However, these plans have not yet turned into concrete production. HABAŞ is planning to establish a separate plant in Manisa for truck production, while also aiming to increase its capacity by purchasing a former Honda factory in the UK.

This initiative, which has created excitement in the Turkish automotive sector, aims to carry out the design and technology development stages in Türkiye, rather than just assembly. With the launch of the production line, a new and powerful name will join the ranks of Türkiye's domestic automobile brands.
