The company is also evaluating the possibility of building a steel plant in the region and is exploring opportunities for environmentally friendly hydrogen-based steelmaking, DRI and electric arc furnace production.

A Dexin spokesperson said on the sidelines of the conference that the company aims to start production of hot-rolled coil by the end of June in line with its strategic expansion plans, with an annual capacity of 2 million tons. The company's current annual steel production capacity is 7 million tons, while plate production is 2.5 million tons. Dexin also produces 4.5 million tons of billet, 0.5 million tons of wire rod and 1 million tons of rebar annually.

Meanwhile, Baosteel Zhanjiang Iron & Steel, part of China Baowu Group, has built a direct reduced iron plant in Guangdong province. This plant can produce up to 1 million tons of DRI per year using natural gas, coke gas and hydrogen using the Energiron Zero Reformer technology developed by Danieli and Tenova.
